The primary mission of the Music and Media Library is to support instruction and research. In that regard, we have a wide range of videos from many different countries, including: feature films, fictional shorts and experimental films; documentaries; music, dance and theatrical performances; ethnographic films and instructional videos.
The library does not regularly maintain a printed list of all the videos in our collection, since EUCLID has the most up-to-date information regarding our holdings and new videos arrive almost every day. An online guide is available for help on finding films and videos in EUCLID.
There is also a limited number of specialized film lists online that you may consult.

| How can I tell if you have the video or CD I need? |
All videos and CDs in the Music and Media Library collection are displayed in EUCLID, the online catalog for all the Emory Libraries. You can look for them using keywords, authors/performers, title, subject and series title, as well as other search parameters.

Items on reserve for your course generally must be viewed in the Music and Media Library, but a certain number of reserve DVDs have second copies that you make take home to view. These are designated by the DVD-LEND item type. You can find the list of current reserves for your course in Reserves Direct.
For items not on reserve, at present over 2,000 DVDs that belong to the Lending Collection may be taken home to view. All non-Lending Collection DVDs, VHS tapes, 12-inch laserdiscs and other video formats must be used within the library.
The Music and Media Library has a number of viewing carrels that you may use to watch videos. We have equipment to view every video format that the library houses, as well as headphones for you to use within the Music and Media Library. For more information, see our Facilities page.
In order to check out a video for viewing, go to the Music and Media Library’s service desk and give the call number of the item you wish to view. In order to ensure equal access the reserve items, you may check out only one reserve video and no more that two total reserve items at one time.

Emory students may book videos for in-class presentations ahead of time, but items that do not normally circulate overnight (such as VHS tapes or DVDs not part of the Lending Collection) must be picked up on the day of the presentation and returned immediately after class. Please come to the service desk in the Music and Media Library for help with booking the videos.

The My Library Account webpage of EUCLID offers the option User Status Inquiry. Enter your Emory Personal ID to pull up your user record. Click on the checkouts link and it will display all the items you currently have checked out and when they’re due. You can find a "My Library Account" button on top of the basic EUCLID search page.

Verify that all your contact information, including your email address, is current in OPUS or Peoplesoft. Your library account information is downloaded directly from the main Peoplesoft/OPUS system on campus. You can also verify your current preferred e-mail address on Information Technology's My Data site.
To change your preferred e-mail address for all campus communications, use the Preferred Email Address Change Handler website. However, please note that this website does not work if you’ve assigned an alias for your email address.

We have videocassette players that can handle VHS tapes in all broadcast standards (PAL, SECAM, NTSC, etc.), as well as multi-standard, all-region DVD players. Players are available both in viewing carrels and in the Group Viewing Room. Library staff can direct you to the appropriate equipment.

| How can I get a video that's not in the Music & Media collection? |
Emory students and faculty can request videos for purchase by contacting the appropriate Subject Librarian or by using the online purchase request form. If you are an instructor requesting a film for screening in class or to place on course reserves, please include the need-by date. However, please keep in mind that the actual arrival time can depend on external factors such as whether the video is currently in stock at a vendor, assuming we are able to locate a copy.
In many cases, you can also obtain the video via Interlibrary Loan. Select the item type “book” on the request form since it’s a physical item.

| How can I get an item that's "ON ORDER" or "IN-PROCESS?" |
You can request IN-PROCESS items for rush cataloging in the following manner:
- Pull up the item record in EUCLID.
- Click the “REQUEST” button.
- Entering your Emory ID.
- Select the appropriate option: “Catalog Rush Request,” “Woodruff Reserves,” or “Music and Media Course Reserves.”
The average turnaround time for in-process items is two business days.
You can also request ON ORDER items for rush processing, but keep in mind that these have not yet been received by the library and in most cases we cannot provide an exact date for their arrival. Ask at Music and Media service desk for help requesting on orderitems or call (404) 727-1777.

| Do you have a special room for watching videos? |
The Group Viewing Room seats up to 20 people and handles a large variety of equipment interfaces and media formats. Use of the room is limited to Emory classes. To ensure access for everyone, no single class may use the room more than six times per semester. Instructors may reserve the room by calling the library staff at (404) 727-1777.
Students may not reserve the room in advance, but groups of 3 or more may use it to view course-related videos if it is not scheduled during the time they want to use it.

Classroom Technologies in Cox Hall offers portable AV equipment for customer pick-up. Faculty, staff, or students within Emory College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may reserve and pick-up audio visual equipment. Student groups on campus may also reserve equipment to support student sponsored club activities. Their direct line to check availability and to reserve portable equipment is (404) 727-5147.

| Why won't a DVD work in my player? |
DVDs are different from older video formats such as VHS cassette tapes in that they are a set of digital files and not simply recorded audiovisual content. The increased complexity of their design also means that there is a somewhat greater likelihood of compatibility problems.
Although it is much less of a problem with the newer generation of DVD players, in some isolated cases certain commercial home video titles do not function properly on certain models of DVD players.
Also, you should check to see whether the DVD you are viewing is a DVD-R (recorded DVD). These discs are individually burned by a laser rather than pressed in mass quantities using a master. These are easily identified by the reddish or purple dye visible through the playing surface of the disc. Unfortunately, not all DVD players are designed to read DVD-Rs. This can result in the disc skipping, freezing, or not booting up in the player at all.
To check on your player's compatibility with the DVD-R format, read the operations manual or check VideoHelp.com's DVD player compatibility list or ConsumerSearch.com's DVD review section. Instructors are strongly encouraged to test DVD-Rs in their classroom player ahead of time.
